Queuing to board “Tor Begonia” at Immingham in the early hours of a Wednesday morning in July I assumed I was taking DFDS’s freight offshoot Tor Line to Gothenburg. Only I was to find DFDS had already decided to rebrand their whole operation, with the Tor, Lisco, Lys and Norfolk Line divisions becoming ‘DFDS Seaways’. So I consider my voyage most timely before the long standing Tor Line name disappeared.

Seeing the new Stena Hollandica at Parkeston Quay, Harwich, which was featured last month, I thought I would contrast her with this ‘flotilla’ at the same quay from early last century.

Discussing the Cornish port of Fowey and its once vast China Clay trade in these pages back in January 2006 Harbourmaster Captain Mike Sutherland was realistic that with the French multi-national company ‘Imerys’ now running the former English China Clays operation as just a segment of their world-wide clay business it was likely tonnage figures at Fowey would continue a downward trend.
