Fire on the “Charlotte Maersk”

Charlotte MaerskAn initial investigation into a major fire onboard the 8,200-TEU Charlotte Maersk off Port Klang has indicated damage done to hatch covers, lashing bridges and cabling.

At the height of the blaze, containers were burning at 1,000 degrees Celsius. Thankfully there were no reported injuries among the 21 crew.

Another Reef Alert Sparked by Bulk Carrier

Great Barrier ReefThere was relief all round at the end of July when the engine of a bulk carrier was restarted as the ship drifted towards Australia’s Great Barrier Reef near Cairns.

China Shipbuilding Rebound

China Shipbuilding Korea has lost its position as the world’s number one shipbuilder to China for the first time since 2003. According to Clarkson Research Services Ltd, Korean shipbuilding companies came in second after Chinese ones in terms of new orders, order backlogs and delivery, the three indices that determine industry competitiveness in the sector.
