Who would want to change places with the Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox? Already taxed with making savings in the Defence Budget of circa 15/20%, he has now been told by the Chancellor, George Osborne, that the capital cost of the replacement of Britain’s nuclear deterrent (the Trident nuclear submarine fleet) will not be borne by the Treasury, but will have to come out of the MOD’s Defence Budget.

During my own time in the ferry sector of our shipping industry from 1971 - 2007, life was never dull, in fact the only constant was change itself. Routes changed, ownership changed, regulations changed. Townsend Thoresen was taken over by P&O; Sealink was privatised, becoming part of Sea Containers and only a few years later was part of the Stena empire. Ferry companies also had to deal with the loss of duty free sales.

2010 is for me a year of anniversaries – a time to recall, reflect and be grateful. On a personal note it is 50 years since I first went to sea as a midshipman with Alfred Holt & Co. I sailed out of London on my first trip on Glen Line’s mv Cardiganshire, full of excitement and expectation of the adventures which lay ahead.

I was greatly saddened by news of the dreadful explosion and fire on the BP hired semi-submersible drilling rig Deepwater Horizon in the Mississippi Delta just over 40 miles off the Louisiana coast on 20th April.
