Sea Breezes Publications Ltd., owner of Sea Breezes Magazine, has been awarded ‘Preferred Developer’ status by the Isle of Man Government for the redevelopment of the former Port Erin Marine Laboratory buildings and site.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has been leading Government discussions to progress the development of the site for the Council of Ministers. Minister, Phil Gawne commented: “I was delighted with the range and commitment demonstrated by all the presenters last week. Presentations were given to politicians and officers from DAFF, DoLGE, DTI, DoT, DTL and Port Erin Commissioners and the choice of the Sea Breezes proposal was unanimously supported. I look forward to seeing good progress made with this proposed development over the forthcoming months. It is very good to see the Government and the private sector working together to generate benefits for the community in Port Erin and the Manx economy”.

Hamish Ross, Chairman of Sea Breezes Publications Ltd. said: “We are delighted with this decision and will push forward with our plans for this important site. The Marine Laboratory was a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for the Isle of Man and its closure in 2006 was a blow. Our bid provides for an exciting, but sustainable use for the buildings and site in keeping with its maritime heritage.”

“The proposals will breathe new life into this area; they include - office suites including an HQ for Sea Breezes allowing our extensive photographic and book libraries to be properly maintained and displayed, a small hotel and associated facilities aimed at activity holiday visitors, small work units for small businesses engaged in small boat repairs/maintenance and a diving centre. Nothing in our plans will constrain in any way the future development of a large marina in Port Erin, in fact they will complement it. We now look forward to working with local interests in the further development of our proposals. Our plans provide an exciting way forward and will provide economic benefit for the local area and the Island”.
