The Cunard Line’s new 92,000gt cruise ship Queen Elizabeth was floated out of the building dock at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard near Trieste, Italy, on Jan 5.
The guest of honour was Florence (Dennie) Farmer, 79. Dennie’s husband Willie Farmer joined Cunard in September, 1938, and served as Chief Engineer on both the former Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Elizabeth 2 until he retired in October 1979.
The Cunard Line said that since her husband’s death, Dennie has sailed with Cunard many times and her link to the two previous Queen Elizabeth ships is unparalleled. In recognition of this, the line bestowed on Dennie the honour, in Italian tradition, of being ‘Madrina’ to the third Queen Elizabeth.
The Queen Elizabeth will sail from Southampton on Oct 12 this year on her maiden voyage, a 13-night cruise calling at Vigo, Lisbon, Cadiz, Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Funchal. Between October and next January, the ship will sail to the western and central Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
