The The Maersk Line have laid up eight 6,500 TEU container ships due to the current market conditions. The move followed changes in their Asia – Europe, Asia – Central America, and trans-Pacific networks which resulted in surplus tonnage.
“Laying up the eight vessels makes better economical sense than redeploying them. Freight rates remain under severe pressure, and in several corridors the rates do not fully cover our variable costs,” said Michel Deleuran, of Maersk Line.
The eight vessels are of the CV 65 class and were being laid up from December, 2008, to May/June this year.
