The Second World War battleship USS Missouri entered into a major refit and restoration program within Pearl Harbor Naval Dockyard. The work will last for three months and cost around $18 million, including installation of new anti-corrosion systems, hull repainting, and upgrading of several internal mechanisms. Repairs are due to be completed early in January 2010.
The battleship's new namesake Virginia class nuclear attack submarine was christened Missouri on Saturday 5 December at a ceremony at the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton Connecticut (Pictured - USS Virginia). The submarine’s sister ship New Mexico, meanwhile, was handed over to the US Navy at the end of 2009.
