The Transition Years
by Malcolm Fife
I have a great fondness for the historic old port of Leith which has been Edinburgh’s main port since the middle ages. The port was transformed in 1969 when a large stateof- the-art sea lock was installed, the result being the largest enclosed deep-water port in Scotland. The port’s fortunes were further boosted by the discovery of oil in the Southern North Sea. This is a well illustrated (colour) record of the transition years with many photographs of the wide range of ships calling at the port. Helpfully there is an introduction setting out the birth of the port, its early years and how it developed. The author explores the decade of change 1970-80. Leith and the Forth in general has also become a major magnet for cruise ships and is of course also the home of the former royal yacht Britannia which has become a major tourist attraction.
