An excellent read for anyone with a fascination for ships and ferry services.
by Miles Cowsill and Colin Smith
In 1999, Ferry Publications published “The North Boats” by the late Alastair McRobb covering the history of the ferry and passenger shipping operations to the Orkney and Shetland Islands. This proved to be an overwhelming success as there is such a great interest in the historical and fascinating ships that have served these islands.
Much has changed since then and now Serco Northlink Ferries are responsible for the operation of these vital lifeline routes. This book, whilst covering the past operations and operators, takes us right up to the present.
This book, as is always the case with books published by Ferry Publications, is well illustrated in B&W and colour – some stunning photographs. On a recent visit to Orkney, I was impressed by the impact of Northlink’s stunning logo and Viking Norseman “Magnus”. Quite a sight watching these ships entering harbour. There is also a tribute to the Masters of the Northlink fleet who sustain the service to the islands, throughout the year in some very challenging waters.
This book will provide an excellent read for anyone with a fascination for ships and ferry services and gives a real insight into the operations of the “North Boats”.
