From Oct 2015, Nathan E Stewart, with an articulated tug and barge (ATB) combination, was heading Ketchikan, Alaska for Vancouver in British Columbia’s inside passage.
She ran on a reef near Sea Forth Channel, Athlone Island.
The tug is seen supported by the empty fuel barge. The tug’s fuel tanks were breached.
Diesel pollution was evident with no booms in place and Heiltsuk Tribal Council of BC accuse the Canadian authorities of being slow and the incident is evidence that this route for tankers and tank barges is dangerous.
