CentaurusJan 27 Modern Express a car carrier (33,831,’01) was heading for Le Havre from Gabon with only a small freight of construction material.

For unexplained reasons she quickly lost stability in poor weather 150 miles west of La Rochelle. The crew were air lifted from the casualty.

The sea state made boarding hazardous for the salvage party and prevented successful tow connection until she had drifted within 50 miles of the French coast and would ground within 24 hours.

Just in time, a final attempt by Smit Salvage’s crew lowered by helicopter connected the chartered tug Centaurus late on February 1st, and as I write the hulk is under way for Bilbao at 3 knots.
