The Association Tourville was founded to build a replica of these ships, and in 2002 work started on building a replica at Gravelines in northern France. The replica is the 57m 1,400 ton 84 gun warship “Jean Bart”.
This ship is not a particular warship, but simply a vessel typical of the period. Jean Bart was a corsaire (pirate) who King Louis made commandant of the North Sea Squadron in 1694. Work on building the replica Jean Bart stopped because of a shortage of good oak, but was restarted in 2009. Ten people are working on the construction; three of them full time.
It is not intended that the ship should have an engine, but would have a tug to go with her to tow her into port for sailing ship festivals.
