At the end of the Southampton Boat Show in September, the barque Kaskelot, which had been on display, was sold and became Le Francais under French ownership.
The barque, which had long been on sale, is owned now by a French group led by Bob Escoffier and his Etoile Marine Croisieres who will manage her, based at St Malo.
Le Francais was built of oak in Denmark in 1948, for the Greenland trade, and was later used as a supply ship in the Faeroes Islands. After being bought by the Davies brothers in 1981, she was rigged out as a barque and based at West India Dock, London. She was then moved to Bristol, and Charlestown in Cornwall that became the base for the Davies’ sailing ships.
The barque has featured regularly in fi lms and television. In recent years, she has also been a firm favourite around the coast at maritime events.
Her new owners intend to keep her on the maritime events circuit.
