Robert Simper was born near the Suffolk coast in 1937 and has spent his working life there.
He has travelled widely and visits Cornwall and the West Country regularly. He is a Founder Member of the Old Gaffers Association and former President.
Well known for his photography, he has had forty books published, mostly about sailing ships and the rivers and coast around the British Isles. He is closely involved with many traditional boat organisations and is still involved in the family farming and shellfish business that includes operating two commercial fishing boats.
Slightly to my surprise I find that it is fifty years since I started writing Sail Review.
This feature goes way back in Sea Breezes to the 1930s when Signal Station reported the commercial voyages of square-riggers. After World War II Philip Kershaw wrote Coastal Sail News that changed to become Sail Review.
Sadly I never met Philip Kershaw, but after he died the Editor, Craig Carter, suggested that I could keep the feature going and I would like to say many thanks to all the people who have helped over the decades.
