The largest combination container, roll-on, roll-off ship ever built in the United States was formerly named in a ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, California, on June 15.

The Lurline is the first of two Kanaloa class ships being built for the Honolulu-based company Matson. The 3,500 teu capacity ships have been specially designed for the Hawaii service. Of more than 50,000 tonnes weight, each ship will be 870ft long, 114ft beam and will have a draft of 38ft.

Both ships will have an enclosed garage with room for around 500 vehicles plus ample space for rolling stock and breakbulk cargo.

They will have the first Tier 3 duel fuel engines to be deployed in container ships serving US West Coast ports.
