Al Safliya

The largest LNG tanker to use the Panama Canal since it was expanded less that three years ago passed through the waterway on May 12.

The Bahamas-flag Al Safliya, 137,535gt, of Qatargas, is of the Q-Flex type and is 315m long 50m wide and has a cargo capacity of 210,000 cu m of LNG. She made the transit from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans.

Jorge L Quijano, the canal’s Administrator, said: “This transit reaffirms the expanded Canal’s ability to reshape world trade and offers customers the benefit of economies of scale.”

Q-Flex tankers can now use the Canal following an increase in the maximum allowable beam for ships transiting the Neo-Panamax locks.The maximum beam is 51.25m.
