Viau Montreal

The Viau container terminal at Montreal, Canada, is to be expanded so that it can handle 600,000 teu a year.

The decision by the management teams of the Montreal Port Authority and the Logistec Corp, through the terminal operator Termont Montreal, to increase the capacity followed the port’s fifth consecutive record year in 2018 which included a nine per cent increase in the number of containers handled at 1.7mn teu.

The first phase of expansion at the terminal was completed in 2016 and this new phase will add 250,000 teu to its current capacity, bringing it to 600,000. The port authority said this project will enable the port to accommodate the anticipated growth in container business and reach the maximum capacity on the island of Montreal to 2.1mn teu.

The work is due to start in September and be completed in December next year. It has been made possible through large investment by the three partners, the port authority, the Logistec Corp and the federal government.

The Logistec Corp. said that Termont Montreal is investing Ca$30mn in this phase which will enable the development of services of the Mediterranean Shipping Co, of Switzerland.
