At Port Everglades, Florida, on Feb 5, some 34,780lbs of cocaine with a street value of $466mn was unloaded from the US Coast Guard cutter Forward after being seized in 21 separate incidents involving suspected drug smuggling vessels and six cutters.

The drugs were most of the total that was held after the interdictions off the coasts of Mexico, and Central and South America.

The USCG cutters involved in these 21 incidents and the estimates of the total amount of cocaine, 37,674lbs, they seized were:

Alert: Responsible for two cases, seizing 5,736lbs of cocaine; Campbell: Four cases, 6,153lbs; Confidence: One case, 553lbs; Forward: Eight cases, 14,207lbs; Hamilton: Five cases, 9,460lbs; and Venturous: One case, 1,565lbs.

Numerous US agencies from the Departments of Defense, Justice and Homeland Security are involved in the effort to combat trans-national organised crime.
