Four new ship-to-shore cranes arrived at the Port of Virginia on Jan 7, the latest development in the port’s $20mn expansion programme.
The 170ft tall cranes are the largest on the US East coast and they will be able to handle the ultra-large container ships calling at the Virginia International Gateway.
As part of the plans, Virginia aims to become the deepest draft port on the East coast,
Last year, it was given approval to deepen and widen Norfolk Harbour’s commercial shipping channels. The inner harbour channels will be dredged to 55ft and the channel in the Chesapeake Bay to 56ft.
