The Maersk Group, of Denmark, has ventured into seabed mining.
In San Diego, California, in April, it launched the first of five offshore expeditions that aim to meet the demand for the essential metals needed to power electric vehicles and renewable energy.
The voyage is part of the work to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement that NORI aims to submit to the United Nation’s International Seabed Authority to convert the exploration licence to an exploitation licence.
The authority has given NORI approval to carry out the surveys within a 75,000 sq km area of the Eastern Pacific plain. DeepGreen and NORI said they were developing the technology that will “allow the responsible production” of polymetallic nodules.
“The metals will be brought to the surface and treated onshore using DeepGreen’s processing technology which aims to produce zero waste.
