In April, the Newport News Shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries completed the inactivation of the former US Navy aircraft carrier Enterprise.
Built by Newport News Shipbuilding, the Enterprise gave a record 51 consecutive years of service and was decommissioned on Feb 3, 2017. As part of the inactivation process that began in 2013, more than 1,000 workers defuelled the carrier’s eight nuclear reactors, inactivated her propulsion systems and prepared the hull for her final tow.
The shipbuilders completed the work in December, 2017, and the government certification of the paperwork has just been completed.
The ship will remain at Newport News, while further work will be completed to prepare her for laying up in the Hampton Roads area until a disposal plan is drawn up.
