The international terminal operator APM Terminals, part of the Maersk Group, closed its operations at Tacoma on Sept 30 and transferred the lease to Seattle-based SSA Marine.

This company has formed a new joint venture with Matson Lines, called SSAT, which started operations on Oct 2. APM Terminals said the Tacoma lease was set to expire on Dec 31 this year and the contract allowed the lease to be transferred.

In April this year, Matson Lines said it would switch to SSA Terminals for stevedoring and terminal services at Tacoma from 2018.

APM Terminals Tacoma was used primarily by the Matson Alaska Service, with twiceweekly sailings between Tacoma, Anchorage and Kodiak, Alaska, and a weekly service between Tacoma and Dutch Harbor, Alaska, handling a combined 190,000 teus in 2016.

In the US, APM Terminals has operations at Los Angeles; Port Elizabeth at the Port of New York & New Jersey; Mobile, Alabama; and a 49 per cent share in the South Florida Container Terminal at Miami, Florida.
