All 511 persons aboard the 561-foot Panamanian-flagged passenger/cargo vessel Carribean Fantasy were evacuated and taken to San Juan’s Pier 6 as a result of a fire onboard on Wednesday, 17 August.
The ship was bound for the Dominican Republic.
As the fire continued to burn in the engine room, the ship eventually grounded a half mile offshore of Punta Salinas and two miles north of San Juan Harbour.
On Friday, the ship floated free, but firefighters were only able to access the engine room on Saturday when Carribean Fantasy was towed to Pier 15 in San Juan where the Puerto Rico Fire Department extinguished the fire around 1800. Although two pets died in the incident, there were no reports of human injuries or serious pollution.
Carribean Fantasy was built in 1989 and is operated by America Cruise Ferries on three weekly sailings from San Juan to Santo Domingo Dominican Republic.
