Decommisioned and dormant for the past six years, the 129-foot fireboat John D McKean has new owners, restaurateurs Michael Kaphan and Edward Taylor, who intend to turn her into a museum honouring firefighters.
The fireboat had been commissioned in 1954, but was recently put up for auction by the City of New York along with other equipment surplus to requirements including filing cabinets.
McKean received 158 bids. The winning bid was just over $15000.
Discovering her to be in almost perfect condition and fully functional in almost every respect including her four 1000 horsepower Enterprise Diesel engines – 2 as main propulsion direct reversible engines that give a top speed of 16 MPH and two others driving four centrifugal pumps, with an output of 14,000 GPM – her new owners expect to have her open for visitors by US Independence Day this year, on the 4th of July.
