Anthem of the SeasAs the US Coast Guard investigated the loss of El Faro and her 33 crew in an October hurricane, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, reportedly with over 4,000 souls onboard, was forced to return to port after being damaged in hurricane force winds off Cape Hatteras.

The ship was underway from New York to Port Canaveral, Florida on the start of a seven day cruise to the Bahamas.

One of the ship’s two azipods was disabled - the equivalent of a conventional ship losing one of two rudders - and the ship returned to port on a single azipod.

Steering clutches on both azipods were then replaced before Anthem of the Seas departed on her next winter cruise which lead some to ask if the ship had come close to a total loss of propulsion and steering during the earlier storm.
