Tight PanamaAs it prepares for opening in early 2016, the Panama Canal July Update included a video showing the state of the projec. And Maersk announced ordering nine new 14,000 TEU ships for $1.1 billion but, ironically, although designed for flexibility, they may not be flexible enough for the new Panama Canal.

Although within length limitations, the 53.3 meters beam of the nine ships exceeds the 48.77 metres maximum set by the canal. Last June, CMA CGM ordered six 14,000 TEU ships with a beam of 48.2 meters, the effective NewPanamax.
