Unobtrusively, in a list of approximately 20 vessels to be scrapped by their owner international provider of offshore contract drilling services for energy companies, Transocean, was a historic Cold War ship.
It was Famous for raising at least part of a Cold War Soviet Nuclear Ballistic Missle Submarine K-129 from the floor of the Pacific Ocean, 4,800 metres below in a position 2,500 klilometres North West of Hawaii. Although listed as GSF Explorer, she was built in 1974 as Hughes Glomar Explorer ostensibly to extract manganese nodules from the ocean floor.
In fact she had been chartered by the CIA and named Azorian. Job done, she was laid up for 20 years before being converted to a drill-ship in the late nineties.
