The New Hampshire Departments of Safety, Marine and Fire Safety Divisions cleared MS Mount Washington, for another year of operation on the states Lake Winnipesaukee.
This clears the way for her to move to her summer home port, Weirs Beach, in good time for her annual Mothers’ Day cruise on Sunday, May 10 followed by her official 2015 daily cruising season beginning on Saturday, 16 May with daily cruises to Alton Bay, Center Harbor, Meredith and Wolfeboro.
The Mount, as she is known, is the former 203-foot sidewheel steamer Chateaugay built in 1888 for the (Lake) Champlain Transportation Company running until being laid up in 1936.
When the original Mount Washington, a 187 foot walking bean side-wheeler, burned in 1939, Chateaugay was purchased and her superstructure scrapped. The hull was then cut into sections, shipped 100 miles by rail to Lakeport, New Hampshire to be rebuilt with a new superstructure and rechristened in 1940 as the Mount Washington II.
