10 February saw Lockheed Martin lay the keel for the US Navy’s 13th Littoral Combat Ship, the future USS Wichita (LCS13), at Marinette Marine Corporation in Marinette, Wisconsin.
Wichita will be a flexible Freedom variant LCS for anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures and submarine warfare. The US Navy’s first LCS, USS Freedom, completed a deployment in 2013.
The LCS production team is led by Lockheed Martin and includes comprises shipbuilder Marinette Marine Corporation, a Fincantieri company, and naval architect, Gibbs & Cox.
