Panama Pacific LockWith the first gate installed on the Pacific side on 19 January, the Panama Canal Authority marked the project 85% complete, marking another milestone for the canal’s expansion program.

Weighing 2,300 tons the steel rolling gate is 22.28 metres high, 8 metres wide and 57.6 metres long and is the first of eight for the Pacific side.

Installation of the eight Atlantic gates began in December 2014. A 120-hectare, five million TEU port with berthing for five post Panamax vessels has also been approved for Panama’s Corozal region at the canal’s Pacific end.
