It was a first for the Chiswick lifeboat when they were called out on the afternoon of July 26 to assist a person in the River Thames to discover it was a woman carrying out a pagan ritual!
A passer-by had seen someone repeatedly entering the water from Chiswick Eyot and dialled 999. London Coastguard requested Chiswick lifeboat to investigate.
Lifeboatman Ian Owen was landed onto the island and located a woman in what they thought was a multicoloured robe or blanket. He said: “She appeared to be in her late 20s and had put mud from the river bed on her face. She wondered why the lifeboat crew was interrupting, and said she was performing her religious rituals. I assured her that the lifeboat crew were solely interested in ensuring her safety.”
Shortly afterwards, the woman crossed the dried out river bed at low tide to Chiswick Mall and left the scene.
