The Scottish Maritime Museum, at Irvine, has abandon hundreds of years of maritime history and tradition and decided to stop calling ships ‘she’ because of vandals.
The female ‘She’ and ‘Her’ will be replaced by the word ‘It’.
Director David Mann said the words ‘She’ and ‘Her’ were on a sign outside the building explaining the history of one of the museum’s vessels and they had been daubed with the word ‘It’.
Mr Mann said this was the second attack this year by vandals on the “very expensive signs, destroying one of the signs which follow the universally adopted and centuries old maritime tradition of referring to ships as female.”
So the Museum has decided to introduce a “general neutral interpretation to recognise the changes in society, and all signs would be altered over time in a phased way so as not to take funds away from preservation projects,” said Mr Mann.
