The first LNG-fuelling of a ship in the fleet of the French line CMA CGM took place at Rotterdam on Jan 24.
The 1,405 teu ship was the Containerships Nord, 17,982gt, which was delivered to the CMA CGM subsidiary Containerships by the Wenchong Shipyard, Shanghai, in December. She is the first of four dual-fuelled ships on order at the yard.
On this first LNG fuelling, the Containerships Nord received around 240 tonnes of LNG, an amount that can take her on a round voyage from Rotterdam to St Petersburg in Russia, sailing through the Kiel Canal in each direction.
The bunkering at Rotterdam was carried out at a lay-by berth in a ship-to-ship operation with Shell’s bunker vessel Cardissa, 9,816gt. In future, bunkering will be carried out at a normal operational berth simultaneously with normal loading and discharging operations.
