The cargo ship Lian Hua Song (pictured) 20,692gt, of the COSCO Shipping Line, China, arrived at St Petersburg, Russia, in September after sailing the Northern Sea Route with a cargo from China.
This was part of Russia’s and China’s One Belt, One Road initiative to include the Northern Sea Route in the Eurasian transport network.
The Lian Hua Song had loaded equipment for the construction of the subway and the renovation of Russian fertilizer producing facilities. The ship started the voyage from the port of Lianyungang on Aug 1, sailed along the Northern Sea Route and arrived in St Petersburg at the Bronka Multipurpose Sea Cargo Complex on Sept 7.
Alexey Shukletsov, of Fenix, the operators of MMPK Bronka, said: “This was the first time in the history of trade relations between our countries that a ship operated by a Chinese company with a cargo for the domestic industry entered a Russian port.”
