One member of the crew died and another was injured in an explosion in the boiler room of the container ship Manhattan Bridge, 147,420dwt, as she approached the berth at Felixstowe’s Trinity Terminal on the late evening of Feb 19.
The ship, owned by Kawasaki Kisen KK (“K” Line), of Japan, operates on the Asia-Europe service and was arriving from Rotterdam and was then to sail to Hamburg.
“K” Line (Europe) said a “boiler back-fire” occurred while she was berthing at 2305 and that the incident will be investigated by the Marine Accident & Investigation Branch. The injured seafarer was taken to hospital. Members of Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service boarded the ship when she berthed.
