Longhope Lifeboat

Four RNLI lifeboats attended the solemn Commemoration of the Centenary of the Battle of Jutland off Scapa Flow on May 31.

Providing an escort for the Longhope vintage lifeboat, the Thomas McCunn, the lifeboats from Longhope, Stromness and Thurso arrived in convoy and stood by in waters just off Lyness. Moored close by were the Royal Navy frigate Kent, the German frigate Schleswig Holstein and other smaller naval vessels.

Scapa Flow was the main wartime anchorage for the Royal Navy and it provided an impressive backdrop to the ceremony which took place on shore at the Lyness naval cemetery on Hoy.
