What is said to be the largest lock in the world, the Kieldrecht Lock at Antwerp, was officially opened on June 10 by King Filip of Belgium.
The new lock is located at the end of the Deurganck dock on the left bank of the Scheldt and with a connection between the Scheldt and the Waasland canal. The lock allows access for ships to all the other left bank docks, Doel Dock, Verrebroek Dock, Vrasene Dock and the Northern and Southern mooring docks.
The first ship to use the lock was the Grande Lagos, owned by Grimaldi Lines.
Costing around 382mn euro, the Kieldrecht Lock is 500m long, 68m wide and 17.8m deep. Its construction was necessary to ensure better access to the port area on the left bank of the Scheldt, as the existing Kallo Lock had reached its limit.
