What was the world’s largest container ship, the CSCL Globe, of 19,100 teu, made her maiden call at Felixstowe on Jan 7. The ship is operated by China Shipping Container Line on its AEX1 (Asia Europe Express) service and Felixstowe is its first port of call in Europe.
The CSCL Globe was built by Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. As well as Felixstowe, the CSCL Globe called at Rotterdam, Hamburg and Zeebrugge then called at Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian and Port Kelang.
The day after the CSCL Globe arrived at Felixstowe, the Mediterranean Shipping Co, of Geneva, claimed that its new ship, the MSC Oscar, at 19,224 teu, was now the largest container ship in the world.
The MSC Oscar was built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard, also South Korea, and was delivered on Jan 8.
