The solar-powered high speed catamaran Turanor PlanetSolar is open to the public every Saturday this winter at Lorient, France, until Mar 15.
While at the berth (pictured), the vessel will undergo maintenance to prepare her for her 2014 programme. The 31m long vessel has 512 sq m of photovoltaic panels providing 93.5kW of power powering six blocks of lithium ion batteries. She is powered by four electrical permanent magnet synchronous motors driving five-bladed carbon fibre propellers through two drive shafts.
The four motors develop a total power output of up to 176kW (239bhp), giving her a maximum speed of 14 knots.
Of 85 dwt, she was launched in March, 2010 in Kiel by Knierim Yachtbau for the Swiss-based PlanetSolar and has a crew of four and can carry upto 60 people. Last summer, she was based in the Baltic.
