In November 2017, I was greatly saddened by the disappearance and assumed loss of the Argentine submarine San Juan.
Despite a detailed and exhaustive search by many ships of several nations at the time, the ill fated submarine, with 44 crew onboard, was not found.
In September 2018, the Argentine government commissioned a search by an American company, Ocean Infinity, using the ship Seabed Constructor. Just a year after its disappearance, its shattered hull was discovered in the seabed at a depth of >900 metres and circa 400 miles off the coast.
It is thought there may have been a build up of hydrogen gas caused by a technical malfunction and a resultant catastrophic explosion. The San Juan was thought to be heading back to her base at Mar del Plata when contact with her was lost on November 15th 2017.
Now there is a public outcry for the wreck of the San Juan to be raised, but this is unlikely with government saying there is no practical way of doing this and cost prohibitive.
