I was delighted to receive a very positive update on the development on the Plymouth Merchant Navy monument.
This monument will be dedicated to ‘The men and women who serve in, or who have served in the British Merchant Navy in peace and war and is a recognition of the vital role of our merchant navy in good times and bad serving this maritime nation’. To have such a monument on historic Plymouth Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound and the Atlantic Ocean will be wonderful. The monument will be positioned alongside the Naval War Memorial.
The original date for the dedication of the monument was to have been during “Mayflower 400” in 2020, but this was moved forward to arguably a more appropriate time as the first action of World War 2 involved a merchant ship, the Athenia.
There is still a small shortfall in the funding for this fine monument and any help would be appreciated (click here to go to the donations page), but to all involved in this important project well done.
