Recently, I have been back in touch with Captain John Anderson; he now lives in Canada, but we sailed together as middies on Blue Funnel's MV Dolius in 1962.
In our exchange of emails we discovered that we both had an interest in birdwatching and in John's case also bird photography.
In one of his emails he said "Going back to birds – a Dolius memory. You may remember Brahminy Kites (also known as the red-backed sea eagle in Australia) swooping over Port Swettenham harbour – large rather elegant birds, but of course they were new to me.
One learns many things as a first tripper, including who/when to ask questions. Can't remember who I asked, but I suspect it was Mr Roberts the bosun "They're shithawks Vasco, shithawks!" he said".
