James Locker, who has three generations of fishermen in his family, is captain of the seven strong crew of the Our Lass III, part of the Lockers Trawlers fleet. James, who catches primarily cod and haddock, has been fishing out of Whitby and Scotland for almost 20 years.
The site, featuring James’ profile and a video outlining how Lockers provide sustainable fresh fish to Whitby’s leading fish and chip restaurants, was launched at the Global Seafood Expo in Brussels this April. The event saw 25,000 fishing industry professionals from 150 countries showcase their involvement in the industry and identify future opportunities within the seafood sector.
Fisherman and director of Lockers Fish, James Locker said: “It is vital for us as individual fishermen to raise awareness of what life is like at sea and all the work, in terms of sustainability and environmental measures, which goes towards putting fresh fish onto dinner plates across the UK and beyond. This is especially important as fish is such a healthy and sustainable food source to feed Europe’s growing population. The new website is a great way for people to find out more about the industry and I am proud to have been chosen to represent the UK.”
iFish is new consumer facing information portal created by Europêche, the trade body which represents 80,000 fishermen and 45,000 vessels within the EU fleet. Developed to address the growing consumer appetite for information on the industry, it will cover key themes such as its economic and environmental impact, as well as its role in providing a healthy, sustainable food source to a growing population.
