At the end of 2013 and into early 2014 the famous Belfast yard of Harland & Wolff carried out a multi-million pound refit programme on the giant oil rig drilling unit Blackford Dolphin (see Sea Breezes February 2014).
H&W must have carried out a fine job on that contract as Scott Mackey has sent me photographs of the two giant rigs Byford Dolphin and Borgny Dolphin at the ship repair quay at H&W in Belfast. The contract (thought to be circa £100m) for the dry docking, modification and periodic survey of the Byford Dolphin (sister to the Blackford Dolphin) was awarded to H&W by the rig’s owners Aberdeen based Dolphin Drilling Ltd.
As with the Blackford Dolphin the Byford Dolphin, which entered the building dock on the 20th January has become a prominent Belfast landmark, at least for the length of her refit. This major contract has created many jobs and is a great boost for H&W, the great city of Belfast and indeed the Northern Ireland economy.
