Red Funnel Ferries has a new high speed ferry Red Jet 6 on the stocks.
At 41m long, the £6 million ship is Red Funnel’s largest-ever high-speed ferry and is under construction at ‘Shemara Refit’ in East Cowes. She will carry 275 passengers (and 22 bicycles!) Powered by four MTU 2000 engines she should be on trials this July.
Pleasingly, the company ‘Shemara Refit’ first evolved from the company set up to save and restore the classic motor yacht of that name, now in the charter market. The yacht was towed to Portsmouth and hauled out in October 2010 then her new owner set up ‘Shemara Refit LLP’ employing several professional shipbuilders and specialists. The skills and experience gained have allowed them to be serious players in the newbuild and refi t market.
Subsequently, Red Funnel, after receiving tenders from around the world, placed their new Southampton to Cowes high-speed catamaran with them for delivery this summer. Red Jet 6 will be the first vessel of her kind to be UK built for 15 years.
And more success has seen Shemara Refit awarded a major contract by London’s ‘Thames Clippers’ to refurbish three of its fleet. The first, Storm Clipper, arrived at East Cowes yard in February and the others will later make the journey from the Thames to the River Medina.
