The World's largest LNG carrier, with a cargo capacity of 270,000 cu m, is being developed by the only builder of large LNG carriers in China, Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, working with the classification society DNV GL.
The current recorder holders are the 266,000 cu m capacity Q-Max LNG carriers built by Samsung Heavy Industries, of South Korea.
In addition, the classification society ABS has granted an Approval in Principle to two new gas carrier designs from the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard, one for a 200,000 cu m LNG carrier and one for a 147,000 cu m Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC).
The LNG carrier is designed to carry the LNG over long distances, while the VLEC has been designed for the US-China routes.
According to DNV GL: “China is on track to be the world’s largest gas importer, and its recent surge in demand for gas has been central to transforming the LNG market globally.”
