The Evergreen Marine Corp of Taiwan, has ordered eight 11,000 teu container ships from the South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

The contract is said to be worth about US$752mn and the ships will be delivered from the first quarter of 2020 to the second quarter of 2021.

Four of the ships will be owned by the Evergreen Marine Corp subsidiary, Greencompass Marine SA and the other four by Evergreen Marine (Hong Kong) Ltd. As these ships are completed, Evergreen will redeliver older chartered vessels as their charter periods expire.

Designed for a service speed of 23 knots, the ships will be 334m long, 48.4m wide, and will carry containers in 19 rows across on deck. The hull is shorter than those of the ultra large container ships used in the Asia - Europe trade, making it easier to manoeuvre the ships during berthing or departure.
