The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) recognised the master and crew of the Japan-managed car carrier Comet Ace, 36,615gt, for rescuing a man in the Vitiaz Strait on Apr 8.
A cadet on the Marshall Islands-registered bulk carrier Cape Spencer, 169,092dwt, was noticed missing at about 0630, and his colleagues had last seen him at 0430. The crew reported his absence as a suspected man overboard to AMSA, which coordinated a search effort with the Papa New Guinea authorities.
AMSA broadcast a request for assistance from ships in the area, and the Comet Ace diverted to join in the search and despite poor visibility at the scene, the ship located the missing cadet in the water and took him on board at 0730. He was not injured, and was later transferred back to the Cape Spencer.
