NYK Line is to withdraw from the Asia-Australia container trades by mid-2016. The company has been operating liner services to Australia since 1896.
It currently participates in three weekly container services that call at local ports: the AAX Southeast Asia-Australia operation (with partners ANL and APL); the NEAX (designated ANA by NYK) North & East Asia service (with partners K Line, MOL, OOCL and Coscon); and the NZS service between Southeast Asia and New Zealand, with a southbound Brisbane call. It provides one ship in each.
NYK told customers it is undertaking a review of its Australian container services “with a likely withdrawal from the AAX and ANA container trades”. However, it emphasised that pure car carrier, bulk and all New Zealand business will not be affected by this review.
“Notice has been served with our liner consortium partners,” NYK Australia said."
