Teekay Australia is progressively taking over management of 12 bulk carriers owned by CarVal Investors, an independent branch of the food and agricultural commodity multinational Cargill.
TKA began taking charge of the vessels in July and the process is due to complete by the end of 2015. It is providing management of vessel operations, marine HR, health, safety, environmental and quality, procurement, IT and other services from its Sydney headquarters. Crews are being sourced through Teekay International.
The ships are all capesize bulkers commercially operated by CVI and chartered by Cargill International SA of Switzerland. Most of the ships were acquired by CVI in 2014 and were previously in the hands of Turkish, Danish, Belgian, German, Japanese and Korean owners, and most recently managed by V Ships.
The new fl eet, all aged up to 10 years, comprises Pretty, Angel, Maka Franz, Silver Surfer, Minnehaha, RS Iron Range, Portage and Voyageurs (already transferred to TKA), along with Minnetonka, Atlantic Bridge, Proud and Scope, which are still to be handed over.
Managing director David Parmeter said the company had secured the new business as a logical extension of its long experience as third-party managers of capesize bulkers for BHP Billiton.
